Why Acrobat Compare Fails on Engineering Drawings
Adobe Acrobat's comparison engine works by extracting text content and comparing it. For a Word document exported to PDF, this works well. For an engineering drawing, the actual content — dimensions, lines, hatching, weld symbols, revision clouds — is rendered as vector graphics or rasterised content, not text. Acrobat either ignores these entirely or reports them unreliably.
In practice, engineers using Acrobat Compare for drawing revisions end up with a result full of false positives (font rendering differences flagged as changes) and false negatives (genuine graphical changes missed).
